3
A. Introductions
  • A Brief Background
  • Purpose of Training
  • Expected Objectives or Outcomes
4
B. Basic IVC Technology
  • IVC – TV versus ITV versus IVC
  • Point 2 Point (P2P) versus Multipoint (MP)
  • Bandwidth = speed of call
  • Types of calls – IP(H.323) versus ISDN(H.320)
  • K-20
  • KOORS
  • People + Content
5
C. Basic Components of your IVC System
  • Monitor and/or Projector
  • Endpoint or IVC device
    • Polycom VSX7000s (Camera and Codec)
  • Handheld Remote
  • Cabling/Wires
    • Microphone & computer interface cables
    • Power & Network connections
      • Make sure you plug network cable into specifically assigned wall jacks.
  • Visual Concert
    • Can use for Doc Camera & Laptop integration
    • Has connections for VGA/Audio in, VGA out to LCD projector, Audio/video out to remote site and provide Internet connectivity for laptop as well.
  • Document Camera
    • Capabilities
    • Explain alternative to using Document Camera
6
D. Operational Basics
  • Prior to IVC session:
    • Booking/Scheduling of appropriate resources
    • Equipment/staff/room, MCU versus P2P
  • What is?
    • KOCO
    • KORRS
  • Use of checklist
7
E. Presentation Basics
  • How do I use technology effectively?
    • Lecture versus Interactivity
    • Use of facilitators and/or moderators
    • Disseminating documents for use in class in advance via email, etc.
    • Use of variety of media sources
      • Use of VCR tapes, CD, DVD etc
        • Make sure equipment is connected properly!
        • Apply similar rules with respect to font/text size when using document camera as when doing PowerPoint presentations (20 point font minimum). If not possible, be sure to use zoom feature to make font/text larger for students to clearly see!
      • Always test use of other media sources in ADVANCE to conducting actual class!
8
Make it Work for Video
  • Start with the rules for good presentations
    • No more than five points per slide
    • Strong contrast between text and background
    • Use color and images to clarify, not distract
    • Simple is good!
9
Things are Different for Video-conferencing
  • Make things really big
  • Never go lower than 20 point font size!
  • Use simple fonts
  • Avoid tricky builds for text
  • Don’t get too close to the bottom or sides!
10
What’s Wrong with this Slide?
  • I have a lot to say
  • I think it’s all really important
  • I don’t want to leave anything out
  • I think you’ll understand better if I list every detail that I can imagine on the subject, down to the last possible point
  • I think I’m running out of space so I’ll make the font smaller to fit in the last phrase

11
Sample Font Sizes
  • 32 point font
  • 28 point font
  • 24 point font
  • 20 point font
  • 18 point font
  • 12 point font

  • When showing text with any application (Word, Excel, PPT, or document camera always consider size of fonts or text!!!!
  • If trying to show a web page, consider resizing view size of web page within browser settings!
12
F. Basic Support
  • Basic Support
  • Always check all wiring and cabling connections prior to session, especially if system has been moved!
  • Check monitor &/or projector settings
    • Make sure correct video resource is chosen
    • Set up for Picture-in-Picture (PIP) or dual monitors for separate local/remote views and or local computer display using Visual Concert
    • If using Visual Concert check display settings for “People + Content” settings.

13
G. Troubleshooting Basics
  • Common Issues:
    • No network connection - is cable plugged in?
    • Can’t Connect - wrong#
    • Poor Video quality – Did they select right speed?
    • Wrong call type - ISDN instead of H.323 (IP)?
    • No video – check right Monitor video input source, Polycom camera source & VGA toggle buttons if using laptop
    • No audio – check mute settings & TV and/or Polycom volume.

H. Summary
  • Online References
    • Etiquette and Tips for Videoconferencing
    • Bad PowerPoint Presentations
    • Teaching or Presenting via IVC
      • Different orientation modules for conducting effective IVC sessions!
  • Remember:
    • Best teaching methodology is in using as many different instructional technology resources as possible (ie: IVC, email, chat, Blackboard or other online tools) along with on-site visitations.
